Tsomogo Lake aka Changu Lake is one of the highest altitude lakes in the Eastern Part of Sikkim. Situated at an elevation of 3753 meters above sea level, Changu is a serene glacial lake just about 40 km away from the capital of Sikkim, Gangtok.

Stretching over more than 1 kilometre and with an average depth of 48 km, Tsomgo with its green emerald water along with the breathtaking view of mountain peaks in the backdrop has bewitched many travellers towards it.

What to See in and around Changu Lake?

Blessed with astonishing scenic beauty, this lake looks different in every season. However, due to its high altitude, the lake remains frozen during the month of winter. This oval-shaped deep blue lake is truly a treat to the eyes of the beholder.

The panoramic view the mountain peaks in the backdrop provides solace to the disturbed soul of the visitors. Moreover, after relishing the beauty of this picturesque lake, one can also visit its nearby sightseeing places like Nathula Pass, Gangtok, Sikkim Himalayan Zoological Park, Baba Mandir, etc.

Things to Do near Changu Lake

There is a lot to do and enjoy near this serene lake named Tsomgo. Rides on colourfully decorated yaks and mules are offered at the lake site. There is a small bridge at the entrance of the lake which acts as a viewpoint from where one can view the complete lake and its surrounding snow-peaks.

One can also visit a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva to take blessing built at the lakeside. Trekking enthusiasts can trek along the lakeside in deep snow during winter or any other season. To have a splendid aerial view of the lake and the surroundings, one can enjoy Changu Lake Ropeway or Tsomogo Lake Ropeway.

How to Visit Tsomogo Lake

Being a protected area, to visit Tsomogo lake, one has to obtain a permit from the Government of Sikkim. One has to show Photo Id proof (Passport or Voters Id Card) and two passport size photos each for the permit.

  • By Road: Journey by road is the most convenient way to reach the lake. Cars can be hired from Siliguri, Bagdogra, Gangtok or even from NJP.
  • By Air: Bagdogra is the closest airport. The distance between them is 160 km and takes more than 6 hours to reach from Bagdogra.
  • By Rail: NJP is the major railway station nearby at a distance of 156 km. From here, it also takes about 6 hours to reach Tsomogo Lake.

Best Time to Visit Tsomogo Lake

During the season of winter (From January to mid-May) Tsomogo Lake stays completely covered in snow. During winter, one can enjoy trekking as well as Yak ride on the snow. From October to December, the lake is partly covered in sheet ice.
During this time numerous migratory birds get attracted towards the lake and can be seen flying in the lake's water. April to July, the blooming flowers can be seen near the Lake.
