The Yak Golf Course in the Silk Route region of Sikkim, at 13025 feet above sea level, is the world’s highest golf course, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The Yak Golf Course, which opened in 1972, was given its first makeover in 1979 by Brigadier J M Singh. Under Brigadier Ranbir Singh and Col. T K Murali, it was transformed into an 18-hole golf course. The Indian Army manages the golf club, which has been a member of the Indian Golfers Union since 1992.
Playing golf at an altitude of around 13025 feet above sea level is one of the thrilling things to do here. However, it will not be easy to play golf at such a high altitude as the air keeps getting thinner once you reach a higher altitude above 10000 feet. Due to the thin air with less Oxygen, you can experience nausea, headache, and dizziness while playing golf. How to Reach the Yak Golf Course
By Air: Even though Pakyong Airport is the nearest airport to this golf course, it is not yet operational. Hence, you have to board a flight to Bagdogra Aiport. From Bagdogra, you need to go for a rented car. The approximate distance from Bagdogra Airport to Yak Golf Course is 181 km.
By Train: NJP or the New Jalpaiguri Junction is the closest railway station. As it is well connected with all the major cities, you will not find it hard to board a train to this station. Once you reach here, a rented car is the only option to go to Yak Golf Course. The approximate distance from NJP to Yak Golf Course is 175 km.
By Road: From Siliguri or any other nearby cities such as Siliguri or Gangtok, you can quite comfortably reach Yak Golf Course. From Siliguri, the distance you have to cover is around 170 km. However, from Gangtok, you have to only cover around 57 km of driving distance.
Best Time to Visit Yak Golf Course
The golf course is open year-round if the weather is permitting. The months of May to December are ideal to visit the Golf Course. Snow would only cover a small portion of the fairways and greens.
