At an elevation of 12500 feet above sea level, Menmecho Lake is one of the most pictorial lakes in the Silk Route region of Sikkim. A mountain lake surrounded by virgin pine forests and deep slopes, Menmecho is truly a magnificent lake that is believed to change colors every minute. Situated on the way to Jelep la Pass and not more than 20 kilometers ahead of Tsomgo Lake, the water of the lake is sourced from the surrounding mountains. On the other hand, the lake itself is the source of a river named Rangpo Chu, a tributary of River Teesta.

Sightseeing Attractions in and around Menmecho Lake

The journey to Menmecho Lake is not for the faint-hearted. In order to reach the lake, you have to trek for at least 4 km. During the trek, you can stop at the nearby viewpoint from where you will be able to get a breathtaking view of the lake. Surrounded by hills covered with pine forest, The Lake's population of trout makes it very popular. The lake is known to change colors, which is a unique feature. From January through May, the surrounding area of the lake is covered in snow, which adds to the beauty of the landscape. The lake's sides are coated with sand, just like a regular beach, and hikers can utilize this spot to stop and take in the scenery.

Visitors can enjoy the grandeur of Tsomgo Lake and Nathang Valley, which are located 4 to 5 kilometers away from Menmecho Lake. These are the two major attractions nearby. Visit Nathula Pass and Jelep La Pass to be awestruck by the mesmerizing views of enormous majestic mountains. On the road to Menmecho Lake, there is also the Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple. The Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary is home to a massive Alpine Plantation. In short, there are lots of tourist attractions nearby.

How to Reach the Lake

By Flight: The only operational airport near the Lake is located at Bagdogra (The approximate distance between them is around 183 km). Bagdogra International Airport is connected to all the major nearby cities. Hence, it will not be a problem to board a flight to this airport.

By Train: NJP is its nearest rail station located near Siliguri Town (The approximate distance between them is around 177 km). From all the nearby cities, several trains are readily available.

By Road: Menmecho Lake is approximately 60 km away from Gangtok and around 173 km from Siliguri. You can reach the lake quite comfortably with the help of a rented car.

Best Time to Visit Menmecho Lake

If you're visiting with family, the best time to go is between June and December, when the snow has melted and the weather is pleasant for everyone. However, if it is possible for everyone, one can visit in the spring to appreciate the snowy environment. Other times of the year, due to the heavy snowfall, the lake becomes unreachable.
